Discovering Sacred Britain

Welcome to the Discovering Sacred Britain website.

The rich and diverse religious heritage of the UK can be traced from pre-historic times to the present day via the vast network of sacred sites to be found around the country.

Discovering Sacred Britain seeks to work with secular groups (from Education, The Arts, Tourism , Regeneration and Development agencies and those committed to Community Cohesion) and with all those who have the care of Sacred Sites. We wish to develop a national network of Sacred Sites which are committed to excellence in Openness, Interpretation and Hospitality. We wish to enhance the visitor experience and to overcome prejudice with experience.

We work with those who have the care of Churches, Mosques, Temples, Gurdwaras, Synagogues and other Sacred Sites by encouraging them to be open to visitors of all faiths and none, to offer a real welcome and hospitality and to present a lively interpretation of their building.

Our contribution to faith tourism is the Marque of Excellence award for visitor welcome, which we present to sites that can offer openness, hospitatlity and interpretation. In achieving these goals Discovering Sacred Britain is there to help with advice, shared experience, routes to funding, and enthusiasm.

The Marque of Excellence

The Marque of Excellence – the concept and the gift of Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber – has been awarded to 60 Sacred Sites in the North West by The North West Multi Faith Tourism Association.

Now Discovering Sacred Britain takes the Marque of Excellence to all the Regions of England.
